Position & Program Summary: 

Beatitude Gardens is a program of Blackburn Community Outreach in Todd, NC. The Gardens’ mission is to build community and increase food access in Todd and surrounding areas. We have a vision to be a community that cares for the earth, cares for people, and shares the harvest. 

The Garden Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of the planning and implementation of the growing schedule for Beatitude Gardens. Day to day activities include planting, weeding, harvesting, washing, and packing produce for our CSA and mobile market, Todd's Table. Other responsibilities include caring for a small flock of chickens, caring for our honey bees, maintenance of Blackburn's Chapel and parsonage grounds (weed whacking, mowing, prayer trail maintenance, general landscaping), and keeping detailed records of harvests and other measurable information. The Garden Coordinator is also responsible for supervising and directing the garden intern and any volunteers. The Garden Coordinator communicates with CSA members about their weekly shares and posts updates on our social media pages.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides vision and leadership for Beatitude Gardens, consistent with BCO’s values of hospitality, wellbeing, service, and community-process. 

  • Develops a crop plan, and pest and weed management strategies according to regenerative practices. 

  • Develops and manages the process for distribution of produce to local hunger relief and income-producing efforts, including harvesting and preparing produce for sale at the Todd’s Table market stand.

  • Collaborates with other staff and volunteers to manage market days at Todd’s Table. 

  • Works regular hours in garden and edible landscaping maintenance. 

  • Develops and maintains relationships with food and agriculture organizations, as well as regional networks and partnerships, and advocates for any needs, events and opportunities connected to these. 

  • Supervises community volunteer work days and coordinates tour groups.

  • Maintains healthy relationships and fulfill contracts with owners of garden plots BCO uses. 

  • Maintains a budget. 

  • Procures necessary tools and equipment for garden work or produce storage.

  • Maintains clear, consistent, and timely recordkeeping and reporting 

Qualifications: 

  • At least 2 full seasons experience in organic gardening/farming. Experience in CSA or farmer’s market production is strongly preferred. 

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in horticulture, sustainable agriculture, agroecology, sustainable development, agriculture; or other Bachelor’s degree with commensurate experience.

  • Physical endurance outdoors, in various weather conditions. Able to lift 50 lbs.

  • Self-directed and self-motivated. 

  • Able to manage a developing orchard and food forest in addition to market garden production.

  • Able to work alongside and direct others. Able to manage volunteer groups of various sizes, as well as interns and apprentices. 

  • Must be competent in basic administrative and office tasks (Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Drive/Docs, etc.) as well as a working knowledge of social media tools such as Facebook and Instagram.

  • Able to maintain a budget, and accurately track program data.

  • Commitment to regenerative agriculture such as social justice and rural community development

  • Criminal background check and a valid driver’s license required
